Cleaning, for some, is very therapeutic. The feeling of cleaning an object, then seeing it clean, is a sense of pride and accomplishment. To others, cleaning is a pain in the neck. The problem, of course. is that if you ignore this chore, things just get dirtier. There are some items that you may not think of cleaning, but these should be cleaned. I am  compiling these cleaning ideas for 20 things you may have ignored.

I love cleaning. I really, really do. I love it to the point that when I get something — especially something stubborn — freakishly clean, I couldn’t feel more fulfilled. Honestly!!!

And sometimes, there are those sorts of messes that actually require tips, tricks, and hacks in order to get them efficiently restored to cleanly status. 

Just in case you’ve struggled here, I’ve put together this list of ways to clean hard-to-clean things so that, in the future, you will never meet adversity when it comes to your 10-minute tidy again. 

1. Homemade Gunk/Goop  Remover

Kitchen cabinets accumulate gunk/ oil stains/ sticky stuff ! YUCK!!!

 and it’s not a pretty sight but you can fix the problem with this homemade gunk remover. 

Mix one part vegetable oil and 2 parts baking soda and use a sponge or a cloth to clean the cabinets. Toothbrush also works as a great Scrubber 

2. Remove labels with Vanish.

 This one cleaning hack happened to be by fluke !  I bymistake Put Vanish in my hot water sink instead of baking soda and vinegar for removing labels ! and VIOLA !! just amazing stuff !

 Actually removing the labels from bottles or jars is not an easy task but you can greatly simplify the process if you use Vanish ( Clothes Stain remover ). Fill the sink with warm water and add a scoop of Vanish & ur normal Liquid dishwashing soap . Let the bottles soak for 30 minutes and the labels come off.

3. Clean the iron with salt.

Cleaning the iron is very simple if you know this tip. First sprinkle salt onto the ironing board, turn the iron to the highest setting and set off the steam option and then simply iron over the salt. 

The dirt sticks to the salt and the iron becomes clean and shiny.

4. Remove pet hair with rubber gloves.

 If you have a cat or a dog then I’m sure you’re at war with all the hair then leave around the house. But it’s not that difficult to remove all that hair. All you need is a pair of rubber gloves. Run your hand over the upholstery and the hair with cling to the glove.

5. Fix the scratches in wood furniture with vinegar and olive oil.

If you have an old wooden table with the top all scratched and ugly, don’t throw it out because it can still be saved. Mix ½ cup of vinegar with ½ cup of olive oil, dip a cloth in the mixture and rub it onto the wood. The scratches completely disappear and the wood looks like new.\

6.Remove hard water with vinegar.! ( I swear by this )

The nasty built up you often see on and around the faucets and in some other areas is definitely not something you want to have in your home. But you can easily remove it with vinegar. If it’s a flat surface, pour some vinegar and let it sit for about 20 minutes. For the faucet, you can use paper towels soaked in vinegar

7.Make your grill/ Pan  non-stick with an onion.

My M-I-L ’s trick !

Getting ready for a Dosa ? Don’t forget the onion. That’s right, you need an onion if you want to make your Pan/grill non-stick. Just cut the onion in half and rub the cut side on the heated Pan .

8.Clean the bathroom faucet with lemon.

Instead of using all sorts of cleaning products which may or may not be toxic, try instead a more natural approach.

 For example, you can clean the bathroom faucet with lemon. Cut a lemon in half and scrub the hard water stains on any fixture.

9.Clean the shower head with vinegar and a plastic bag.

Make your shower head look like new again using distilled white binegar and a pastic baggy. Pour vinegar in the bag and secure it to the shower head. Let it soak with an hour and wipe clean with a wet towel.

10.Make your own window cleaner.

All you have to do to make sure you have clean windows with no streaks is use water, vinegar and dish soap. Mix these three ingredients and your windows will be sparkly clean. Also, remember to use newspaper. Spray the windows with the mixture, use a white cloth to wash them and then dry them up a waded up wet  newspaper.

11.Clean the stove burners with ammonia( Bleach).

If you ignore them, the stove burners and the grates can end up looking disgusting and nobody wants that in their kitchen. So what can you do? It’s simple actually. Clean the stove with ammonia. Take ¼ cup of ammonia and seal it up with one of the burners in a plastic bag. Let it sit overnight and then it should wipe clean with a sponge.

12.Cleaning solution for the kitchen sink.

Make your own cleaner for the kitchen sink using the following ingredients: liquid dish washing soap , distilled white vinegar, baking soda, rock salt, lemon or lime and ice. You’ll also need an old rag, a toothbrush and a soft sponge. Rinse off the sink and sprinkle baking soda onto the surface. Make a paste and rinse. Scrub the rim with a toothbrush soaked in baking soda paste or soap.

13. Make your own Oven Cleaner .

To clean the oven, you can mix baking soda and vinegar. You also need a bowl and a spatula. Scrape the debris with the spatula. Sprinkle baking soda all over the floor of the oven. Then spray vinegar over the baking soda and spread the paste around. Let it sit for 10-20 minutes. Scrub in a circular motion.

14.Remove permanent marker with toothpaste.

If you have a kid who just discovered the magic of permanent markers, then you’ll most likely find works of art on the floor and furniture. Don’t worry, it can be removed. First put a dab of white toothpaste on the marker and rub with a damp cloth or paper towel.

15.Clean silver with salt and baking soda.

Both salt and baking soda are commonly used in homemade cleaning products. But why not mix them? If you do that you get a very nice cleaner which you can use on silver. Combine equal amounts of salt and baking soda.

16.Moldy Tile Cleaner 

Sometimes u gotta use harsh chemicals !The best way to remove mold is with a solution of one part chlorine bleach to 10 parts water. Wearing rubber gloves, saturate a clean sponge or cloth with the bleach solution and apply it to the mold. Let the solution soak for 15 minutes, then rinse it off. Thoroughly dry the surface and throw away the sponges or rags you used to avoid spreading spores to other surfaces.

17. Cleaning Burnt Pans 

Soak the burnt pan in a magical solution overnight.

Baking soda, vinegar and water. A perfect solution for burnt pans.

18. Clean your Cutting Board 

Clean your cutting board.Use lemons to remove stains from wood and plastic cutting boards.

Squeeze, rub and let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse.

Now enjoy your house smelling like lemons. Rather than chemicals!

19. Odor Control in Refrigerator 

Use newspaper as refrigerator drawer liners.Newspapers absorb odor from vegetables.

also always place a open box of baking soda in the refrigerator to remove odor from the fridge .

20.Microwave Cleaner 

Steam clean your microwave.

Add 1 cup of vinegar to 1 cup of hot water. Microwave it for 10 minutes.

Let’s face it: Cleaning can be a daunting task. And keeping things clean is even worse.

This month I will be sharing a few spring cleaning posts, to help inspire you to dust off those cob webs, open up the blinds & let the sunshine in.  If you are like me, you need motivation to conquer such a large set of tasks & thats what I hope to do this month.  Join me today, as I share my  Spring Cleaning Plan.  But before we begin cleaning, I want to share some tips on how you can get prepared for the week ahead. Some overall tips to get you started:

Set a timer for the amount of time you’re going to clean — you’ll be surprised at how much you can actually get done in five minutes. Even better, put on your favorite song! Turn the volume up high and set your phone’s sleep timer to stop playing the music after one, five, or ten minutes (depending on how much time you have). Remember: You don’t need to try to deep-clean everything.

That’s because this challenge isn’t simply about the results — it’s about creating new healthy habits for your home. Cleaning is not a set of ideals to aspire to, a standard of perfection to achieve. This is a mindfulness practice, and if you are cleaning or decluttering mindfully, you have already arrived.

Oh, and if any of the steps don’t apply to you (if you don’t have a dishwasher, for example), just spend some extra time on one of the other steps. Or, sign up for our daily newsletter reminders to get an exclusive bonus round suggestion for each day!

And, we’re off!

1.  I make sure I am all stocked up on my cleaners. For my spring cleaning, I typically use Basic Cleaner which is an all purpose cleaner, window cleaner, and degreaser in one.  I only use non-toxic cleaners in my home.  (Cleaning with toxic cleaners does more harm than good).  I place the cleaners in my caddy, along with trash bags & rags.

2.  Stock up on trash bags, paper towels or rags, and candles (I always have a candle burning & the music up loud, while I clean).

3.  Make a week of dinners ahead of time, because you will not have the time or the energy to cook when you are spring cleaning.

4. Organize your cleaning schedule (type or write it out & put on a clipboard), matching days to tasks. I try to have my spring cleaning complete in one week. It takes an additional week to clean the outside of my home (power-washing, wash window screens, weeding, preparing the garden, cleaning out the terraces & Balconies, cleaning out the car, etc.)

Spring cleaning checklist:

 Things u will need :-

1. Spray bottle (with 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water solution)

2. Microfiber cloth

3. Socks (cotton or microfiber work best)

4. Plastic bags

5. Lemon

6. Duster

7. White vinegar 

8. Magic Erasers

9. Rubber band

10. Newspaper

11. Dryer sheets (used work best)

12. Antibacterial all-purpose cleaner (APC)

13. Paper towels

So Lets begin our spring cleaning !!

Day 1:

  • Clean all walls, windows & mirrors (spraying everything with Basic Cleaner  eliminates the need for a bucket of water & cleaner)
  • Clean all glass surfaces
  • Wipe down electronics

Day 2:

  • Wash all curtains (including shower curtains)
  • Wash all bedding (including quilts & pillows)
  • Flip mattresses
  • Empty all trash cans, clean and sanitize them.

Day 3:

  • Clean the kitchen:
  • Clear the entire counter top and sanitize
  • Wipe out & organize all cabinets. Throw out old food and dishes you no longer use.
  • Wipe off the top of fridge
  • Dust fridge coils
  • Clean out fridge and freezer
  • Clean out oven (including vents)
  • Clean microwave
  • Sanitize the sink and garbage disposer
  • Wipe down all appliances.

Day 4:

  • Change all filters ( water filtration)
  • Polish all furniture in house (and wax if needed)
  • Clean toilets, sinks, medicine cabinets and showers

Day 5:

  • Vacuum out couches & chairs
  • Wash couch cushions
  • Vacuum and mop all floors
  • Wash rugs

Day 6:

  • Cleanall carpets
  • Replace all smoke detector batteries( optional)
  • Replace burnt out lightbulbs

Day 7:

  • Rest because next week its time to head outside!!

Extra chores you can do this week:

  • Switch out winter wardrobe to spring
  • Oil change in car (fill fluids, check belts, install new wipers)
  • Clean out car (Shampoo floors, mats & seats, leather conditioner)
  • Clean out vacuum cleaner
  • Clean out dog kennel
  • Reseal grout lines & rechaulk
  • Clean out email box
  • Clean out your wallet/purse/backpack
  • Clean the lint trap in the dryer

How to clean a House ……

How to keep a house clean….

When I first started a few years ago , I was forever making up lists and methods to keep track of everything from organization to daily routines. I had notebooks and files and all sorts of systems involving complicated color coding and chore tracking devices. The problem was, once I would get the systems all set up, I would fail miserably at using them.

I had made housekeeping more complicated than it needed to be. I felt like I was always behind and my house seemed on the verge of chaos.

In my constant struggle  to live life more fully, I’m always evaluating and re evaluating  things I want to include  into my life and what things I DON’T want.

I want to have a beautifully decorated, clean and organized home, but there are other things in life that are important to me too.

 I want my home to be in order so I am free to have  relationships and enjoy living, but I don’t want to be a slave to my housekeeping routines.

So, how do I balance it all? I keep it simple.

Over the years I’ve found I can focus on four basic housekeeping routines that work for me, and I’m sticking to them. I can add other things, of course, but these are the tried and true basics. Some I learned from Flylady, some were ideas from other sites  I read as a young mom and many are just my own ways of doing things. 

By breaking it down and doing what works for me, I feel I can manage my life, instead of my house taking over my life.

Here is what I FOCUS on every day:


I have found that having a regular morning routine works best for me. This involves at the very least: some quiet time, not making the bed, taking a shower (hanging up my towel when I am done, of course!), putting on very simple makeup and getting dressed right down to my shoes. I always toss in a load of laundry as I am getting dressed. I find if I start out the day with those few things, I am ready for anything and feel energized to tackle my day! 


I learned the Fly lady system back when my daughter  was born. I was taking care of her and shifted into a new house . All that and working part-time!

 Fly lady to the rescue! She broke it down for me and I listened: clean and shiny sinks, always. Interestingly, it was the same exact advice my mom taught me as a young girl!

I follow this principle both in our bathrooms and the kitchen. Something about striving for that shiny sink keeps me from letting dirty dishes pile up in the kitchen and icky stuff like hair and spit discouraging me every time I pass through the bathroom.


Since the beginning of our marriage, my husband and I have utilized what we call “cleaning frenzies” to give our home a quick clean up every day. A cleaning frenzy might last ten minutes or even up to an hour. But everyone participates, including the 3 of us . We run around picking things up, putting things back, and generally tidying things up.Sometimes we focus on one room; sometimes it is an entire house frenzy. Sometimes it is a task frenzy, like dusting or cleaning all toilets! It works like a charm to make a big impact in a short period of time. Even one “10-minute cleaning frenzy” a day keeps the frustration away.


Every night, almost without fail, we clean the kitchen. We put away dishes, load the final dishwasher load of the day, wipe off counters, and polish up the sink. There is nothing like waking up to a clean kitchen to make your day feel less overwhelming from the start.



If I Have My Basic Routines Down, My Home Stays “Clean Enough” Most Of The Time. Keeping Up On Things Means I Rarely Feel Overwhelmed By All That Needs To Be Done! When My Home Is Maintained On A Daily Basis, It Is Really Easy To Add In A Few Extra Tasks Now And Then To Really Shine Things Up Or Get Things Organized.


But If I Let My Daily Routines Go, My House Soon Spirals Out Of Control. My House Isn’t Perfect By Any Means, But I Am Ok With That. It Is Clean Enough! I’m Sticking To My Tried And True Basics. No More Complicated Chore Charts For Me! I Promise, My Four Daily Routines Work!

I don’t want to panic anybody, but we are getting perilously close to DIWALI  now. To help you keep everything under control, here is my suggested to do list for the week leading up to NOVEMBER 1OTH 2015 .

A thorough clean before Diwali  to make sure everything is spotless and tidy before your guests arrive will go a long way towards maintaining your housekeeping routine. This will also minimize how much time you will have to spend cleaning up when everyone else has gone home. Use this checklist to get ahead:


One Week Before

* Buy non-perishablesBuy as much as you can in advance, so that you aren’t jostling with last minute panic buyers.IF like me u have a party every year I would suggest u have all the party dinner ware ready by this week .

* Buy Diyas and Rangolis , gifts etc . Do not forget to add Diya’s and Rangolis also the Lantern  to your shopping list. It’s a real shame when you can’t use your old lights and realize it at the last minute its not working !

*Buy bulk gifts, such as a case of wine or multiple candles, gifts, Sweets , to offer to neighbors, acquaintances, and party hosts. 


* Set up a wrapping station in a low-traffic area of your home; wrap gifts as you buy them. 

* Shop online; you can do so at any time of day, and it will save you the time of wrapping and shipping gifts.

*Unpack decorations, and inspect them for damaged Decorations  and burned-out bulbs. ( Every year I clean up the decorations lights etc  after diwali and keep them in a box , all I have to do is to unpack the box this year and I am all set )

* Deep clean your house. If you read my holiday cleaning post then you may already have this in hand. If you haven’t started your deep clean, however, then it is time to start!

*Kitchen Decluttered– to make your life easier on Diwali day keep a cubby or a cabinet free so that any thing can be kept there last minute 

Three Days Before

*Windows  Hang lights and display decorations around a streak-free window. Just mix one to two teaspoons of dish detergent in a large bucket of warm water. Scrub the surface and then use a squeegee the remove suds

*Refrigerator     You’ll need to make sure your fridge is odorless and clean, especially if you’re storing a lot of food.

* Sort out Diwali  dinnerware. Put everything you will need in one place, and check it is all clean and usable.

* check guest list and reminders 

Two Days Before

* Buy fresh flowers , Puja Items etc . Now is the perfect time to shop for fresh floral arrangements, Garlands etc .. – if you leave it until tomorrow, you might find all the best flowers are gone.

* Re-charge batteries. If you want to capture those magical memories, make sure your camera and video camera batteries are fully charged. Do it today, so that you can capture some sweet pictures of your kids on Diwali  Eve too.

One Day Before

* Do your last minute Diwali cooking/ baking . You might also want to do some early cooking preparations for Diwali  day, such as preparing your vegetables.

* Work out your cooking/ puja / family / friends  times. Save yourself time on the big day by working out your timings the night before.

* Do a final pick up. Go from room to room and return any out of place items to their correct home.

* Dust and vacuum/ mop . Hopefully, you haven’t left all of your cleaning until the last minute! Have a quick clean up  through to get your home looking neat and tidy.

* Change bed linen and towels.

* Enjoy your family traditions. With all of the hard work out of the way, it is time to relax. Pour yourself a glass of your drink and RELAX !! enjoy your tomorrow as it should be 🙂


How are everyone’s Christmas preparations going? Are you calm and organized, or panicking about everything that still needs to be done?


Make Your Kids Part of the Cleaning Routine . But though it can be challenging to keep things clean, neat, and orderly when you’ve got young children at home, it’s not impossible. In fact, the secret is to make your kids part of the solution, rather than the problem. here are a few tricks and tips for u to get help from little helping hands !

1. Have Realistic Expectations.

To a child, asking them to “clean a room” is an overwhelming and confusing thought  they often have trouble understanding . Asking them to put away their clean clothes away or to clear off a play area  are likely more manageable expectations and will eventually lead to better help with keeping a cleaning routine.

2. Set Timers.

I don’t know about your kids but mine works much more efficiently with deadlines. If I asked her to pick up all the toys off the floor and return them to where they belong, it might take all afternoon because she would become distracted by playing with them. But if I set a timer for 15 minutes, the task was over and done 15 minutes later. We called our timed cleaning tasks as “cleaning  fairies ” and it turned what might feel like a chore into a fun game. And as a long term bonus it taught her  to become independent and  efficient!

3.Have A Place for Everything.

 By regularly purging excess and having a clear place for everything, I hoped to teach my kid to be successful not only with daily cleaning but understanding the need for keeping only what you need and basic organizational skills. Then automatically she started doing things like she has always done them !

4. Set Aside A Time for Daily Cleaning.

Once a month cleaning and weekend cleaning plans did not work at our house. For awhile we tried Saturday cleaning and it pretty much ruined our weekend. Once I realized that I didn’t enjoy letting all the housework pile up to be dealt with on Saturday, everything changed around our house. A little bit of upkeep every day helped my whole family to become people who generally just picked up after ourselves regularly, rather than waiting until “heavy cleaning day.”

5. Rewards, Memory Making and End of the Week Fun.

It is so important to make living fun and memorable. I never wanted Poohcoo to have more memories of “cleaning days” and “chores” than of regular family fun and I really like teaching  her about the rewards of hard work and daily discipline. So I reward her every Friday ,after her whole week of tasks are done ,we go through our Chore List and enjoy the rewards by way of ICE-CREAM!!! imagesSo while this battle may not be worth the effort–or even feasible–for everyone, I can say without hesitation that it was most definitely worth it for us, not simply for the clean room, but for the character it is instilling in them….and in me.


How to Clean a Living Room

Has it been a while since you cleaned the living room? If it’s time for a big cleanup, don’t worry. There are many ways to get a living room looking better.

While we may be doing an excellent job of maintaining our living rooms, occasionally we need to do more than maintenance. Take the time to review what goes into a living room intense cleanup.

Find a list of supplies along with step-by-step instructions to do a thorough cleaning in your living room.

Printable Checklist LIVING ROOM & DINING ROOM

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 45 Minutes- 1 hour

What You Need:

Dust mop (preferably with a long handle)

Step-ladder Cleaning cloths

Small bucket with handle Sponges

Vacuum with attachment

Gentle cleanser(here)

Rug shampoo machine with upholstery attachment (optional)

Spot remover for upholstery or carpets (optional)

Here’s How:

Begin with a 15 Minute Living Room Cleanup.

This will clear out the clutter and give you room to do the actual intense cleaning in your living room. Don’t worry about cleaning the floors in the 15 minute clean up. We will do this later

. Dust down the living room ceiling and corners of walls in.

Determine if the walls need washed in dirty spots. Spot wash, remembering air vents, doorknobs, doors, and switch plates.


Dust and clean all art and photographs along the walls in the living room. 

Dust and clean the ceiling fan in the living room.

Take down any light fixtures and gently wash and dry them before replacing. Take down draperies, curtains, and blinds to wash or have cleaned according to the manufacturer’s directions.

Dust and clean out the couches and chairs Dust down and clean all accent lamps and knickknacks in the living room. 

Remove books from bookshelves. 

Dust down accent tables and your living room’s entertainment center.

Clean the carpets and rugs. 

Take the time to clean the doormats inside and outside your doorways.


  1. Gather all of your supplies together first thing. Trying to sort through the pantry cabinet for your dust cloths might make you frustrated enough to declutter the cabinet. It’s easy to forget what your initial goal was.
  2. Partner up with a friend or relative. After you get done intensely cleaning your living room, help her do hers.
  3. Listen to music, an audio book, or a foreign language tape. The time will pass a lot more quickly if you have an enjoyable atmosphere. This is a great time to commandeer the stereo for what you want to listen to. If anyone objects, offer to let them have a turn with the stereo and the cleaning.

Play some music while you clean.This can help you enjoy your job much more. ( Whistle While u work, Seven Dwarfs of Snow white Did it !!) The key to a clean home is cleaning it consistently.   • Daily: On a daily basis, collect any toys, mail, etc. that has accumulated over the course of the day and put them in a pile in the middle of the room. One by one, put them where they belong.
  • Weekly: On one day per week, dust around the room – working left to right and top to bottom. From there, you can move on to cleaning your coffee table and other surfaces. After dusting, it is also a good time to vacuum your furniture, removing and rotating sofa cushions to encourage even wear and increase their useful life.
  • Monthly: Move your furniture and vacuum beneath it. Wash your windows as well (weather permitting, i.e. above 50 degrees). You should also clean your furniture as necessary.
  • Yearly: On a yearly basis, you should evaluate your living room, taking care to de-clutter and dusting anything that is hard to reach (i.e. ceiling fan) using a ladder as necessary. This is also a good opportunity to clean your fireplace if you have one.

Hope all of you had a great weekend ! We @TMH had a wonderful weekend with Father’s Day BBQ and the very first international yoga day in India !
Well, anyway this week we are gonna tackle the extra bedroom /craft room / home office room, whatever you may call it ! ( This week I will be posting a lot of posts for this room Particular so bear with me :))
It’s very difficult for me to tackle this room coz this room serves 3 in 1 for us ,craft room , home office and a guest room if need be ! It’s always a challenge for me and I dread the week I have to clean this room (arrgh)! You probably already know how challenging it can be to get a room intended to serve two purposes to do both things well. 
Cleaning the Craft Room / Closet :
• Sort: Working out what you have and sorting it into meaningful groups.
• Purge: Getting rid of the junk you don’t need.
• Assign: Setting a place to store the stuff you need to keep.When like items are grouped together, cleaning up is easier and little ones know where to return items.  Labeling is a good idea if you want items to be returned to ‘their spot’.
• Containerise: Acquiring suitable shelves, boxes or whatever to store the assigned items.
• Equalise: Setting aside regular time to maintain the system you’ve designed.

Organizing the Craft Room / Closet  : ( PRINTABLE HERE )

• Decluttering: When you first begin to organize your  room, eliminate old materials you are no longer interested in Keeping . By decluttering your Items or stuff in my case  materials, you will free up a lot more space to be efficiently organized.


• Project Area: Your room should have one central area where you can work on current projects. I don’t have one yet but then just starting BABY Steps!!
The  area should give plenty of workspace, and needed materials should be able to be temporarily stored nearby for whenever you have a moment to work on the project.
• Working Area ( I will have one soon ) : The table workspace area you use for ongoing projects is most efficient if everything is within easy reach. Tables shaped like a U, T, or L are most efficient and maximize your workspace and storage area. If you don’t have a shaped table, add on to a basic table with freestanding worktables or other surfaces that can be moved if necessary.( Right now My Dining table work for me but in a day or two I have an extra table to move in there !)
• Lighting: Natural light is most comfortable to work with, so choose a craft room with large windows or skylights and position your workspace area near the best light sources. 

• Labels: plastic bins and easy-to-read labels are perfect for crafters. Label all storage bins clearly,  I hand made Labels as Staples in Bangalore are Shutting down!! Or rather Dropping Dead !

• Immediate Access: If there are specific tools and materials that you use with most projects, such as scissors, a glue gun or a small sewing kit, they should be stored in an immediately accessible area.
